The atom is made of a nucleus surrounded by electrons. Every element has a specific number of electrons associated with the nucleus and in specific atomic orbitals, which are in their lowest energy, most stable electronic configuration, the so called 'ground state'. If light of the right wavelength impinges on a free ground state atom, the atom absorbs the light and the electron from the outer orbital is promoted to a less stable configuration or the 'exited state' (E2). As the state is unstable the electron immediately returns to its initial position the 'ground state' (E1) emitting the same quantum of energy it had absorbed. The capacity of an atom to absorb very specific wavelengths of light is utilized in atomic absorption spectroscopy. The quantity of interest is the amount of light which is absorbed as light passes through a cloud of atoms. This quantity is directly proportional to the concentration of the analyte element.
